Reiki is known as the universal life force. The mind usually drifts away during a treatment and a client often feels they have been to another existence, feel totally renewed and often leave all of their worries behind.

Rather than go into a deep explanation about what reiki is, I often tell my clients to experience reiki for themselves, as the experience is unique to each individual. Some of the experiences during a reiki session include the visualisation of many colours, going back to a previous dream or childhood experience or simply feeling that the body is falling into the depths of the earth.

Everyday we see things that affect our overall well being. Violence, stress, anger, happiness, joy and laughter will have many different affects on different peoples’ lives. Stress if left untreated starts to accumulate as pain and knots in the neck and shoulders. Worry and grief accumulates until we start to feel physically sick and nauseous. Love and pain affects our appetite and our sense of self-control. Stress affects our energy levels, energy is difficult to measure and impossible to see, but we know it exists. We all know deep inside that the mind and physical body is one. One cannot operate without the other, and therefore one must affect the other.

Reiki is understood to encourage the body to release negative energy, negative thoughts, stale emotions and grief. It is replaced by fresh clean untouched energy that comes freely from the universe and the atmosphere surrounding us.

 The treatment:

During a treatment the practitioner merely acts as a conductor. Energy passes through them between the universe and the client. Ideally there is no ego or pretentiousness attached either to the therapy or practitioner. It is the client that has the ability to self-heal, occasionally stale energy and stagnation block the paths (meridians) and the reiki practitioner is there to help unblock them. By placing their hands on the client, energy is renewed; this is often felt by the conduction/friction of heat or cold in the practitioners’ hands. One by one the meridians are unblocked as the practitioner places their hands on the head, face, shoulders, arms, back, major organs, legs and feet. Negative energy is pulled from the fingers and toes and released into the universe. Finally the seven chakras are cleansed and the soul is rid of negative energy. The seven chakras are; base of spine (Red) grounding; Erogenous zone (orange)female/male energy; Solar Plexus (Yellow)soul and centre; Heart (Green) love and emotion; Throat (Pale blue) creativity/speech; Third eye (violet) Intuition and awareness; Crown/top of head (white or sometimes pink) overall protection well being. Pink is sometimes separated as the eighth Chakra representing love and entirety.

N.B. Post healing crisis is not often associated with Reiki. It is safe for everyone to use, except first trimester in pregnancy, as it is believed to speed up natural processes. Being tearful following treatment is quite usual, though clients equally finish their treatment feeling, renewed, happy and full of energy. Perhaps as the energy is new and fresh!

Summer May-28-2011

Namaste! Summer is now with us after a rather cool and prolonged spring!

Summer is the time of year for the Pitta dosha which is the elements of fire and a little water. On humid days we may find this dosha on the increase and therefore must be aware of the alarm bells ringing. As fire is responsible for transformation it is particularly associated with all of our major organs that transform. These include the heart and the digestive fire. Pitta increases at the hottest part of the day, so 1 p.m. is not a good time to have a heated discussion as tempers may rise! Remember to drink eight glasses of water a day to avoid dehydration, as this may result in kidney stones which are rather painful and unpleasant.

Foods to favour during this time are all the cooling foods so coconut is a good choice as well as fresh lime juice. All other citrus fruits are heating and therefore a glass of fruit juice is not a favourable choice if you are complaining of insect bites or heat rash / sunburn, this will just irritate them even further. Take time to relax to avoid high blood pressure and try burning either flower oils such as rose or lavender or my personal favourite sandalwood which has an extremely cooling effect on the mind and body.

High pitta symptoms may include irritable skin, indigestion, high blood pressure, anger and profuse sweating. If these should occur, take my advice and cool down in the shade, a cool shower may also be welcomed. Pranayama is a breathing exercise which is also useful for balance and cooling.

Generally all of my treatments are suitable for this time of year to help you relax, reiki is especially calming or a soothing massage using calming and cooling oils is also well received.

Enjoy your summer, and feel free to contact me for any advice!
